Good news regarding the iOS4 troubles! We have completed some improvements on the app’s server that should eliminate most timing-out issues for devices running iOS4. (Older devices might still have issues, and we’re working on those too.) The changes are live and anyone who has been having issues with iOS4 should try just launching the app. If problems persist, simply delete and reinstall the app and that should do the trick.
We want to thank everyone who contacted us and contributed to the effort, including members of our Google Group and those who left comments on our iOS4 posts.
And a little icing on the cake — we expect to submit an update to iTunes next week that will bring multitasking to the Public Radio Player. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s approved.
UPDATE: The multitasking update for the Public Radio Player is taking a bit longer than expected, but we’re working on it.

I have the exact same problem that James reported almost a week ago. My iPhone 3GS 16g w/ios4 suddenly freezes when loading prx. I’ve had prx for almost 5 months with no problem. I’ve also loaded this app previously with ios4 without any problems. I’ve tried powering phone off & on along with deleting & reinstalling app again. Still freezes will loading app. Any idea when problem will be fixed? This is one of favorite apps!

Hang in there, folks. We are putting the finishing touches on an update that should hopefully resolve some of the issues you’re having, plus get you some multitasking goodness.

I too am having issues w/ a fresh download of prp v 2.1. I am running a iPhone 3GS 16g w/ ios 4.01. I downloaded prp for the 1st time about 30 mins ago, and upon launch, got the frozen Loading screen. Saw a ton of bad comments echoing same info of late on iTunes. Powered off, and back on, same results. Saw this post; deleted and reinstalled, same results.
This us all from comfort of home: 3G and wifi available.
Maybe I’ll try killing wifi and 3G next…
Nope, downloaded and attempted start using edge network only. Same result.
Any ideas?

It’s still not working for me either. It times out on the loading screen every time I run it. I have tried both restarting and re installing it.
I am on an iPhone with os4

What’s going on with the multitasking update? It’s been three weeks without another word! At least give us a new ETA, won’t you?

The updates may have solved the occasional issue with the app waiting indefinitely for a stream. Nonetheless, a suggestion regarding this would still be nice: a startup prompt to let the user select to NOT continue the previous playback.
I’ve noticed some stations returning a 404 code, presumably server setups not handled by this app. My own local station, KPBS, never succeeds in establishing a stream, yielding a timeout error almost immediately – again, likely some odd server setup.
Hopefully stations will become better about publishing a correct listing (or perhaps there are some timezone issues) and deciding on a uniform spelling for “wait wait… don’t tell me”.
The app concept and execution in general is marvelous! and has become a standard part of my life. I’ll have to upgrade my phone to get multitasking but look forward to being able to drop out of the app to text a contribution to the station I’m listening to at the moment.

Stan, what generation iPhone are you using? Give us some more details and we’ll do our best to help identify the problem. Thanks!
