We are excited to announce that work has started on an Android version of the Public Radio Player. The Player has been accepted to participate in the Google Summer of Code which will kick start the process of rebuilding the app for the Android platform. The Summer of Code is a global program that pairs student developers with open source software projects like ours. We have been paired with Mahesh Sharma, a student from India. Mahesh is already busy familiarizing himself with the existing app and is organizing requirements for the Android version. (We’ll introduce you to Mahesh more formally in an upcoming post.) He will be working closely with Matt MacDonald, Technical Projects Director here at Public Radio Exchange. At this stage, we have no target release date for the Android version of the Public Radio Player, but we’ll keep you posted as the work progresses.
Introducing the Public Radio Player to other mobile platforms has long been a goal of this project. But we naturally had to wait until the timing was right and the resources were available. While the iPhone remains the most popular smartphone device, the Android platform is growing fast and has reached the point where we could no longer ‘wait and see’. (And a special shout-out to all the Android-toting public radio fans who gently reminded us about the demand for an Android app.) It’s clear that the development efforts on the Android version will greatly increase the reach of the Public Radio Player and make mobile streaming of public radio available to millions of new users.

I had a public radio app that worked great. I could listen to stations from all over the nation. Replaced my phone and now I can’t find it. What happened?

If you download the Tune-In Radio app to your android you can listen to PRX.
Why wait for this app, when you can just use this.

Checking in again almost a month later. Still no updates since December? If all that was left to do was fix performance issues, I would think it would have been done by now. Since it hasn’t, I cannot help but wonder if this project has actually been…gulp…abandoned!

It’s a bit dissapointing that the process takes this long.

I had found the PRP for my iPod and it has been one of my most favored apps. I just got an Android phone and the first thing I did was look for the PRP download for Android only to be very disappointed to find that it was not yet available for this OS. Can you provide an estimate for when it will be released? Like others, I would be willing to donate $$$ to help get this app out the door! CAN’T WAIT!!!

Mark me down as another Android user searching for an app. As of December you were saying you were “close to launching,” but here it is months later in April and no more word. I think if you put something up for people to make donations towards the effort on the Android app you’d see some support there. **Hint**Hint**

When you’re looking for beta testers, please consider letting me know. My wife & I are frequent beta testers & both work in software support; I have the Impact, she has the Droid 2 Global.

I see this has been asked several times already but may mine will be the one that gets answered -
When will the android app be available? It’s been a year – that’s a long time.

Is the Android application coming along? I am a developer with the Android development environment set up on my computer and would love to help if there is anyway I can. I love this app on my iPod Touch and would love it on my Galaxy too.

Thanks for the answer. Actually I was mistaken. The App was Public Radio Live, not yours. Anyway it is gone and I am looking forward to your Android version. ~david

David – We haven’t yet released the Public Radio Player app for Android, and when we do, it will be free, just like the iPhone one. I guess we have an impersonator?
We’re very close to launching ours, just working on some audio performance issues that get really complex when you have so many different devices and OS versions.

I had downloaded the Public Radio Player PAID from the Android Market a month or so ago. And now it doesn’t play and is not in the Android Market at all…. Free or PAID.
What’s up with that?

I’m surprised wmra is so married to Apple. Maybe I should get the other phone? …public radio is almost worth it, but NO! I will not join up w/ appl! I wonder what is the hold up? Is Apple blocking progress?

Rekha:
Thanks for the update. I’ve been using the NPR app and, while it’s very good, it doesn’t allow for live streaming. My iPod Touch permits live streaming (in mp3 format) and I wish that I could say the same for my Droid.
Good to hear that work on the Droid app is continuing.

Bill, NPR does have an Android app, though I don’t know if WFDD is on it: http://www.npr.org/services/mobile/android.php
We had to shelve the Public Radio Player Android project temporarily, but it’s up and running again and we’ll be sure to make a HUGE announcement when it’s ready.

The last official announcement of the NPR Android Player project was five months ago. Anything new? I enjoy listening to WFDD-FM on my HP notebook, but I’d enjoy this even more if I was using my Motorola Droid instead!

It may be true that the Android platform is growing quickly along with the app adoption (which is not necessarily bound together, see Symbian platform). Not sure how the public radio player offers exactly, but I hope it is not a simple extension of a previous format to the new mobile format (like in the old days where radio was squezzed into tv).

I switched from iPhone to Android a few weeks ago and haven’t found anything on Android that is nearly as good as your app for iPhone. Hope the Android version comes out soon. Thanks.

Rico,
Our Google Summer of Code developer, Mahesh, made great progress on the Android version, but there’s still a fair amount to be done. Still working on it, haven’t given up!

So how’s that Android app coming? It’s September, so I guess that means the Google Summer of Code is over?
There’s a different public radio player on the Android Market, but it’s pretty crappy. But I guess it’s the way to go until this one is ready.

Also looking forward to the Andriod version. Jettisoned my iPhone for the cool HTC EVO! The best app I used was the Public Radio App.. Loved it and can’t wait until I’m reunited with it on my new phone!

Timothy, the existing iPhone app is fully functional on the iPad. We will consider a native iPad app after the other projects we currently have underway.
